Jack Hoddinott
Jack Hoddinott was the chief steward on the Valencia and one of the last survivors to perish when the ship finally collapsed into the sea. His brother Charles Hoddinott, a waiter on the Valencia survived on the last life raft and later recounted what happened. His brother refused to leave the ship for a place on the raft, but urged him to go. “I asked my brother to go with me,” said Charles, “but he refused, saying he was going to stand by the women and children. So I bade him good bye and jumped overboard.” Charles Hoddinott was rescued, along with 18 others on the raft by the Topeka two hours later. He would find out days later that his brother, and all the remaining survivors were swept into the sea and drowned at the same time as he was rescued by the Topeka. Jack Hoddinott's body was never recovered.
