Charles Welch
Charles Welch, a seventeen-year-old boy who was employed as a pantryman on the Valencia. The Call on 25 January reported, “Welch lived in this city. He was the son of Henry Welch, stoker of Engine Company 26 on Second Avenue, near Point Lobos Avenue, and the home of young Welch was across the way from the engine house. Welch must have gone down after a desperate struggle, as he was young and strong and the kind to put up a vigorous fight in the face of imminent death. His parents are prostrated over the news that their son was among those who met a watery grave.”
